What is Kaomoji?
Kaomoji (顔文字) is a Japanese word meaning "face (顔) character (文字)." These text emoticons originated in Japan's ASCII art culture in 1986 and are formed by combining keyboard symbols and characters to express emotions and expressions. Unlike Western emoticons (:-) or :)), kaomoji are read horizontally and offer a much richer range of expression. Today they are widely used on platforms like KakaoTalk, Instagram, X (Twitter), Discord, and many more.
